Owning an AC- Lesson 1

Window AC, or split AC, or even better?

Window AC –

Is economy is your primary criteria while choosing an Air conditioner?

Is there an external wall having a window more or less in the centre of the wall?

Is there enough outer space for air circulation near the window with no obstruction?

Then a window AC is the best choice for you.

However if the second line is not fulfillable, then you have to settle for a split AC only!

Split AC-

Is economy NOT your primary criteria while choosing an air conditioner?

Is your preference for less noise from your air conditioner?

You don’t want cold air stream hitting you directly on your body?

You want more or less uniform temperature throughout the room?

Then your choice has to be a split AC!

Cassette AC –

Are you going in for a false ceiling in your room?

Do you have a problem with disposal, or leakage of drain water, from your split unit?

And do you want a visible differentiation of your life style within your friends circle and elsewhere?

Choose Cassette air conditioner that is way above even split AC in all aspects, including uniformity in cooling and sound levels.

With some limits, you can even condition a second small room simultaneously, with a cassette air conditioner of leading makes!

Owning an AC- Lesson 2

A retail shop or an authorised dealer?

Congratulations.

Now that you have decided to own an air conditioner, know a few things before you step out to own one!

BECAUSE OWNING AN AC IS DIFFERENT FROM OWNING A TV/RADIO/COMPUTER ETC! BECAUSE AN AC REQUIRES REGULAR SERVICE FOR ITS LIFE TIME UNLIKE THE OTHER APPLIANCES!

After deciding the type of AC that you want, from lesson 1 posted earlier, here is the most important step that is related to the act of actually buying an AC!

There are TWO major types of sources from whom you can buy your AC.

A retailer, or a sales and service dealer (SSD)

A Retailer is one who sells many products other than ACs also in a shop. Sales, is his speciality.
A dealer (SSD) is one who sells, installs and services one or many brands of air conditioners. Service is his speciality

A retailer installs the units through contractors, and services through another contractor or a service dealer as per his agreement with the manufacturer.

The installation is also done with no or little supervision from anyone from his side, or the servicing entity, leave alone the manufacturer. All manufacturers today concentrate only on selling and not on installation or service.

In many cases the ‘supposed to be provided warranty service’ itself is never provided to the unit! Forget about the after warranty service as the machine ages!

In other words, when you buy your AC from a retailer,

KNOW THAT HE DOES NOT OWN UP ANY OF YOUR PROBLEMS WITH THE UNIT IN FUTURE!

If you have experience of calling up a call centre for your problems you must be aware of what it is like to go along this route!

However when you buy from a SSD, he installs the unit through a contractor, but with supervision or guidance from his technical staff, as it is they who need to look after the AC after commissioning.

A retailer plays the game of volume sales for his margins, while an SSD depends on his service quality with clients for his margins. As a result he builds a personal rapport with you through his service personnel right from the date of commissioning. And if you are NOT satisfied with the service, he knows that, you have no reason to go with him for the service contract after warranty period! So you are assured of service during warranty without fail.

He not only services your machine, but he is aware that he is serving you!

Hence it is worthwhile during the time of your purchase as to ascertain, who will do the installation and service. The standard answer from a retailer will be, ‘company trained people’, whereas no company trains anyone on this! Better will be to ask to be shown the service station

Even with a service station, there is yet another point to be noted

Some service dealers as well as a few SSDs, bring the units to their service station for attending to major complaints. The main aim here is to have a control over quantity of material used! However this is likely to invite delays because of limitations in space, equipment and manpower at the service station.

An SSD who does all repairs in situ or at site directly works in front of you. A split unit is serviced in its installed position itself and requires no separate working place unlike a window unit!

Only window ACs are brought to the service station, as most of the customers having a window AC are likely to have space limitation for servicing.

These marketing concepts of the retailer work well in the west only, because 1) Most of the work done is professionally carried out irrespective of who does that, 2) The clients are better trained to keep records of purchase etc to answer back when calling a call centre, 3)And they all speak one language English, where as in India the language that you may hear from the call centre
might not be a comfortable one for you

Thus there will be a difference between the two routes that are available to you.
